WHAT? The North American Cities of the Future 2009/2010 is a competition to find those cities, small and large, with the best prospects for inward investment, economic development and business expansion.

Puerto Rico once again outshines its Caribbean neighbours in fDi’s Countries of the Future competition, with Jamaica coming in as runner up. Charles Piggott reports.

Alongside the BIO 2007 event in Boston, representatives from cities across North America attended an awards reception at the Marriott Copley hotel on May 7 to collect their prizes for fDi magazine’s Cities of the Future rankings.

Chicago, Juarez, Windsor and Zapata are the top cities in fDi’s North American Cities of the Future 2007/08 rankings. Charles Piggott reports on the leading performers among major, large, small and micro cities.

In April 2007, fDi magazine will publish a ranking of the economic, business and financial strengths of cities across the NAFTA region. We want to find those cities, small and large, with the best prospects for inward investment, economic development and business expansion. We will be looking at more than 60 criteria covering everything from cost effectiveness to human resources and infrastructure.

American and Canadian political leaders and investment promotion professionals receive fDi awards fot North America's most promising locations for inward investment, at industry events in Chicago and Philadelphia.

Mexico’s states boast major infrastructure projects, innovative investment incentives and a well educated workforce. Foremost among them are fDi’s Mexican State of the Future, Distrito Federal, and runner up Nuevo León.

The Caribbean is a hive of activity, with plenty of infrastructure development and healthy economies. Leading the way is Puerto Rico, which fDi names Caribbean Country of the Future in this first biannual contest.

Chicago wins the accolade of US City of the Future and Texas is named US State of the Future by fDi’s judges. Karen E Thuermer reports on the strengths of these and the category winners in this first annual contest.

Chicago is without doubt a world-class city – so much so that the entity that promotes it is called World Business Chicago. The details explain why.

Perhaps it is the sheer size and diversity that gives Texas much of its strength. In 2004 the state lassoed a steer-bucking GDP of $847.81bn. Forecasts for 2005 are an increase to $886.15bn, and up to $1146.31bn for 2010. The only FDI figures available date back to 2001, putting inflows at $112bn.

Excitement is building as the deadline approaches for entering fDi magazine's Caribbean and Central American Cities and Countries of the Future 2005/06 competition. More than a dozen investment promotion agencies from the Caribbean and Central America have already put their names forward.
